Even in the Rain we had a notable day with exams for Toby and Steve as first time Technicians, while and Josh and Jason upgraded to General Operators.
Paul was checking in with the forecast on our downpour, as Josh and Toby are taking exams. Our antennas were unplugged during a remarkable lightning storm.
Earl, Toby, Don, Ron and Paul in group chats as the exam scores are checked.
Toby searches for new equipment as Ron assembles the FCC Exam packages for mailing.
Josh is getting familiar with Mike's data rig as some young visitors were getting a tour. We ran a single wire antenna inside our structure while the storm was surrounding the area, and that kept us from being totally disconnected.
We had visitors from the offices of Sheriff, Search and Rescue, and the Mayor. Bill, Max, Mike & Leonhard.
Josh and Mike are covering our tactics with Charlotte and Leonhard Caflisch the Commissioner of Independence. We actually have a politician that agrees that our future requires cutting expenses!
Mike has his elaborate array in fine tune on a single wire and ladder line, demonstrated to Commissioner Caflisch
Paul is giving the breakdown decision, the storm has washed us out this year. We are out of the game for making contact in an intense blast of close strikes of lightning. We saw the upper rails of the Stadium hit by at least one strike, and we had three antennas mounted to those rails.
The amazing part of this story is that we were practicing for communications in disaster or emergency situations. The storm was very near to the effect of a disaster, and provided an opportunity to study our location and setup. We originally chose the park as a fair weather environment, but the unexpected events have given us a more serious consideration to location of a headquarter operation. We can set up a field operation in virtually any environment, but being structured as a headquarters requires a more stable enclosure.
The next years Field Day will have the situations of the previous events planned into the operation. We now have the experience of a tragic natural occurrence, but the luxury of no damage or injuries. Our technical structure is excellent, and now we need our planning structure to be outlined and defined.
Every year is a new opportunity. Our next year could be the best!
